3-Chloro-2,2-dimethyl-1-propanol is a deuterated compound that is used in the production of pesticides. 3-Chloro-2,2-dimethyl-1-propanol has been shown to be effective as an alkylating agent when reacted with pyridinium ions. The reaction mechanism starts with the nucleophilic attack of a methyl group on the electrophilic carbon atom in the pyridinium ion. This leads to the formation of an ion pair and the release of an intermediate product. The reaction proceeds through three steps: hydrogen abstraction from the methyl group by the hydroxyl oxygen, addition of methylene (CH) to form a double bond between C and C, and finally protonation at C to form a carboxylate ion and a water molecule.
