Multidrug efflux pumps are membrane transport proteins that pump out drugs and other foreign substances from inside bacterial cells. Cetylpyridinium chloride is an inhibitor of these pumps, which could be used to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance. It has been shown to inhibit multidrug efflux pumps in a number of different bacteria, including Enterobacter cloacae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. Cetylpyridinium chloride has also been shown to inhibit the growth of wild-type strains and antibiotic-resistant strains of Escherichia coli through the use of chemiluminescence and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. The antibacterial activity for cetylpyridinium chloride has been shown to be effective against both Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. This drug also inhibits the production of methyl glycosides by inhibiting the enzyme amidase, which
