Cocarboxylase hydrochloride is a pharmaceutical preparation used to treat fatty acid oxidation disorders. It is a white, crystalline solid with a molecular weight of about 441. Cocarboxylase hydrochloride has been shown to have an optimum pH of 5.5 and a metabolic rate of 0.072-0.098 nmol/mg protein/min at 37°C in vitro. This drug binds to the hydroxyl group on the fatty acid molecule and increases the rate of electron flow from NADH to FADH2, which can be measured by constant pressure calorimetry or gas-liquid chromatography. Cocarboxylase hydrochloride is soluble in water and organic solvents such as glycol ethers and cell culture media, but insoluble in ethanol or hexane.
