Calcium acetylacetonate is a trifluoroacetic acid derivative that reacts with metal hydroxides and fatty acids to form metal chelates. This compound is used in the treatment of wastewater, where it reacts with calcium ions to form calcium acetylacetonate. The reaction mechanism can be broken down into three steps:
1) Trifluoroacetic acid reacts with metal hydroxide to form a metal salt and a carboxylic acid.
2) The carboxylic acid then reacts with calcium ions, forming an ester bond between the carboxylic acid and the calcium ion.
3) The ester bond breaks down, releasing the carboxylic acid and leaving behind the metal chelate.
