Catharanthine sulfate
Synonyms:
  • Ibogamine-18-carboxylic acid,3,4-didehydro-,methyl ester, (2a,5b,6a,18b)-,sulfate
Description:

Catharanthine sulfate is a pharmaceutical drug that can be used to treat cancer. It is a cholinergic antagonist that inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase and prevents acetylcholine from binding to its receptor, thereby inhibiting cell growth. Catharanthine sulfate has been shown to have anticancer activity in cell culture studies in mcf-7 cells. The mechanism of action of this drug is not fully understood, but it may involve inhibition of DNA synthesis, induction of apoptosis, or cross-linking with DNA. This agent also reacts with maleic acid to form reaction products that are more soluble than the parent compound.
