(2-Chloroethyl)phosphonic acid (2-CEPA) is a phosphorus-containing molecule that functions as an inhibitor of the enzyme ATP synthase. It has been shown to have the ability to inhibit mitochondrial energy metabolism, which can lead to apoptosis in cells. 2-CEPA can also inhibit signal peptide processing, plant metabolism, and protein synthesis. The monosodium salt of 2-CEPA has been shown to have physiological effects on plants by inhibiting ethylene production and altering the water permeability of plant cell walls. This compound also has anti-cancer properties and may be used as a part of a therapeutic regimen for cancer treatment. 2-CEPA is also being investigated as a potential therapeutic agent for use in treating psoriasis or other skin conditions due to its ability to regulate calcium ion influx into cells.
