1,4-Cyclohexanedimethanol is an organic compound that has two hydroxyl groups on each of its four carbon atoms. The molecule can be considered to be a carboxylic acid with the structure shown below. This fatty acid is a dicarboxylic acid and has antimicrobial activity. It is used in the production of polyesters and as a chemical intermediate in the preparation of pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds. 1,4-Cyclohexanedimethanol forms an ester with methanol, which can be hydrolyzed by heating with concentrated sulfuric acid to form acetic acid and methyl alcohol. The formation of this acid from 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol is catalyzed by heat or light, but not by air.
