Carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP) is a protein synthesis inhibitor that prevents the production of proteins by binding to ribosomes at the site where they attach to messenger RNA. This drug has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth in wild-type strains, but not in mutant strains. CCCP also inhibits mitochondrial functions and bacterial flagella, which may be due to its ability to bind to dinucleotide phosphate. CCCP can be used as a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy. The bound form of this compound is more toxic than the free form. Benzalkonium chloride can be used as a carrier for CCCP, and it enhances its toxicity against hl-60 cells.
