- Benzoic acid, 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-, copper(1+) salt (1:1)
Copper(I) 2-hydroxy-3-methylbenzoate (CuHMB) is a reactive, carbonic copper compound that is a potent inhibitor of tyrosinase. This enzyme catalyzes the oxidation of the amino acid tyrosine to produce melanin, which provides skin and hair color. CuHMB inhibits this process and has been shown to be an effective anticancer agent in vitro. The molecular mechanism for CuHMB's inhibitory effect on tyrosinase is not known, but it may be due to its ability to form homodimers that bind to the active site of the enzyme. CuHMB also has potent inhibitory effects on other enzymes, such as PDE5 inhibitors that are used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
