Cedrene is a terpene that has been isolated from the bark of the Cinnamomum tree. It is found in many essential oils, such as cedarwood oil. Cedrene has been shown to have an effect on bacterial strains and locomotor activity in rats. It binds to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers and inhibits DNA synthesis by binding to the enzyme DNA gyrase, which is needed for DNA replication. Cedrene also inhibits serine proteases and fatty acid synthesis, which are involved in muscle diseases. This compound has been shown to be effective for treatment of muscle diseases at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight per day. The chemical diversity of this compound includes hydrochloric acid (HCl).
