Citronellol is a monoterpene alcohol that is an intermediate in the metabolism of plant-derived essential oils. It is produced by the oxidation of geranyl pyrophosphate. Citronellol is used as a natural flavoring agent in food and beverages, as well as being used in perfumes and cosmetics. Citronellol has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against infectious diseases, including HIV and malaria. It also has anti-cancerous effects, inhibiting tumor growth through apoptosis induction and cell cycle arrest.
Citronellol has also been shown to inhibit the production of nitric oxide, which may be responsible for its anti-inflammatory properties.
