9-Cyanophenanthrene is an aromatic hydrocarbon that has been shown to transfer reversibly between the active methylene and nucleophilic attack sites on DNA. 9-Cyanophenanthrene binds to one or both of these sites, depending on the concentration of methanol in the solvent, and can be displaced by metal ion or chloride. This compound has been shown to form exciplexes with thymine bases in a nonpolar solvent, which are formed when two or more molecules are held together by weak electrostatic forces. The stability of this complex depends on the redox potential of the molecule. 9-Cyanophenanthrene also forms a stable complex with dna duplexes in aqueous solution at high chloride concentrations, changing the conformation of the duplexes and leading to strand breakage.
