4-(4-Chlorophenyl)-2-pyrrolidinone (4CPP) is an anti-convulsant drug that is used to treat epilepsy. It has a high boiling point, allowing it to be used in liquid chromatography methods. 4CPP is also used as a solvent for drugs and excipients in the pharmaceutical industry, and can be obtained through chemical synthesis or by dehydration of butyric acid. The reaction products are trehalose, which is a sugar that prevents the formation of ice crystals, and gabapentin, which is an anti-convulsant drug. 4CPP can be synthesized on an on-line basis using electrospray ionization with a liquid chromatograph/mass spectrometer system. It has been shown to have clinical use in the treatment of epilepsy.
