Cys-Gly-3M3SH binds to the bacterial enzyme urease, which is responsible for converting urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide. The binding of this peptide prevents the hydrolysis of urea, leading to cell death by disruption of the proton motive force. Cys-Gly-3M3SH is also biotransformed by bacteria in humans and can be used as a probe for transport studies in vitro. It can also be used as a molecular probe for structural biology research, such as protein crystallization and electron microscopy studies.
