Chlorin-e6-trimethyl ester is a diagnostic agent that binds to the carbonyl group of proteins. It can be used for the detection of tumor tissue and for the identification of viruses such as influenza virus. Chlorin-e6-trimethyl ester has been shown to inhibit viral replication by binding to the viral envelope protein and preventing binding to host cells. This agent also inhibits bacterial growth, and has been shown to have anti-influenza virus activity in vitro. Chlorin-e6-trimethyl ester is absorbed through the cornea and is used as an ophthalmic agent. In addition, this compound has been shown to be effective against cancerous tissues in vivo.
