Description:Caffeic acid benzyl ester (often abbreviated CAPE) is a derivative of caffeic acid, naturally found in propolis. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester has antimicrobial activity against human oral cariogenic bacteria and inhibits the biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester is an antioxidant and an inhibitor of hyaluronidase, similarly to chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid. Additionally, caffeic acid phenethyl ester has antimutagenic and antiviral activity in human pulmonary fibroblasts (WI-38 cells). It also has a reported antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtiiis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as well.
