L-Canavanine sulphate is a diaminopropane derivative of amino acid L-canavanine, which is found in plants. The molecule has been shown to inhibit growth, and induce apoptosis in hl-60 cells. It was also shown to be toxic for yeast strains by inhibiting protein synthesis. L-Canavanine sulphate inhibits the production of spermidine trihydrochloride, a polyamine that regulates cell division and cell death in polymorphonuclear leucocytes. This drug has also been shown to cause histidine resistance in mutant yeast cells. L-Canavanine sulphate has been shown to have anti-cancer properties by inhibiting IGF-I and protein synthesis.
