Carbidopa ethyl ester is a prodrug of carbidopa. It has a cavity that can be filled with the drug and then injected into the body. Carbidopa ethyl ester is an acid-labile prodrug that is converted to its active form, carbidopa, by decarboxylase in the brain. Carbidopa is an inhibitor of peripheral aromatic amino acid decarboxylase, which converts L-dopa to dopamine. This allows for more dopamine to be available to the brain and reduces symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease.
