Detomidine is a narcotic analgesic that is used to relieve pain in animals. It has been shown to have a pharmacokinetic profile suitable for administration by oral or intravenous routes. It is metabolized by glucuronidation and mercapturate conjugation to 3-carboxy detomidine, the major metabolite of detomidine. 3-Carboxy detomidine has a longer elimination half-life than detomidine, which may be due to its lack of dependence on renal excretion. The glucuronidation and mercapturate conjugation pathways are dependent on glutathione, which may be depleted during periods of inflammation or stress.
