Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that inhibits the inflammatory response by blocking the production of cytokines. It also has anti-inflammatory activity, which is due to its ability to inhibit leukocyte migration and activation. Dexamethasone inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting phospholipase A2. This drug is used in the treatment of many inflammatory diseases including asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. Dexamethasone is also an intermediate in the synthesis of other drugs such as prednisolone, betamethasone, and triamcinolone.
