Product Information
- Nervonic ceramide
- Nervonyl-D-sphingosine
Ceramides are lipids that are found in the outermost layer of the skin, which is called the stratum corneum. They have a number of important functions, including providing structural support, acting as a barrier to keep water from leaving the body, and regulating the passage of substances through the skin. The C24:1Ceramide marker was used to identify patients with chronic inflammatory disease and those who were overweight. This marker is present in both plasma and urine. The elution profile for this marker was found to be similar to that seen for markers for glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) activation. GSK-3 is an enzyme that has been implicated in chronic inflammatory diseases such as diabetes mellitus type 2 and rheumatoid arthritis. The analytical method used is an ionisation mass spectrometry (IMS) with electrospray ionisation (ESI). This technique provides fast, accurate results with minimal sample preparation requirements.
