2-Chlorobenzoic acid (2CB) is a compound that is structurally related to gamma-aminobutyric acid. It has been used as an antimicrobial agent in wastewater treatment. 2CB inhibits the bacterial growth of group p2, which is an important cause of hospital-acquired infections. The antimicrobial activity of 2CB may be due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds and coordinate geometry with the phosphate groups in DNA, thereby inhibiting the function of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. When 2CB reacts with a hydroxyl group on a sugar, it forms a glycosidic bond that prevents bacteria from producing cell walls.
