3-Chlorosalicylic acid (3CSA) is a phenolic compound that is structurally related to salicylic acid. It is a colorless solid with a melting point of about 110°C. 3CSA can be formed by the reaction of hydrogen bromide and butyric acid at 100°C in the presence of an inert solvent such as argon or ether. This compound has been shown to inhibit mutant enzymes in vitro, which are enzymes that have been altered by gene mutation and have lost their ability to function properly. 3-Chlorosalicylic acid also has been shown to bind strongly to diphenyl ether, which is used as an inhibitor for theophylline kinase, leading to its inhibition.
