• Description: (R)-Chlorpheniramine maleate is a selective H1 receptor antagonist that has been shown to have an anti-allergic effect. It is a cholinergic agent and also blocks the action of histamine at other receptors. Chlorpheniramine is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and excreted in urine mainly as metabolites. In humans, chlorpheniramine reaches peak plasma concentrations within 1 hour after oral administration and has an elimination half-life of 4 hours. The drug binds to plasma proteins with low affinity (30%) and may cause interactions with drugs that are also bound to plasma proteins, such as potential interaction with calcium antagonists and other cholinergic agents.
