Citrinin is a mycotoxin produced by several fungal species. It is a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase and has been shown to inhibit glucose transport in photosynthetic bacteria. Citrinin also inhibits electron transport, causing oxidative damage to vital cellular components such as DNA, mitochondria, and cytochromes. The inhibition of electron transport by citrinin is due to its ability to bind to the coenzyme Q10 at the protein level. This binding prevents the formation of a functional complex with the enzyme complex II of the electron transport system, which leads to decreased production of ATP in the cell. Citrinin has also been shown to be an inhibitor of polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
Citrinin can be detected using chromatographic analysis with chloroform:methanol (2:1) as mobile phase and detection at 280 nm; it can also be detected by x-ray diffraction data from crystals obtained from ethanol
