Coumaphos is a potent insecticide that belongs to the group of antimicrobial peptides. It is used in veterinary medicine to control ticks, fleas, and other pests. Coumaphos inhibits the ryanodine receptor, which is a calcium channel in the sarcoplasmic reticulum of muscle cells. This inhibition prevents the release of calcium ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum and consequently blocks entry into the contractile apparatus. Coumaphos has been shown to be effective against Boophilus microplus, an animal pest that causes cattle disease. The LD50 for this drug is higher than 1 g/kg when administered orally in mice or rats.
