3-Cyanoacetylindole
Synonyms:
  • b-Oxo-1H-indole-3-propanenitrile3-Cyanoacetyl-1H-indole
  • 1H-indole-3-propanenitrile, beta-oxo-
  • 3-(1H-Indol-3-yl)-3-oxo-propionitrile
Description:

3-Cyanoacetylindole is a quinoline derivative that has been shown to be an efficient method for the synthesis of 3-cyanoacrylic acid. 3-Cyanoacetylindole has also shown anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo, as well as high cytotoxicity against cancer cells. This compound functions by interfering with the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and protein, which leads to cell death. 3-Cyanoacetylindole also exhibits antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi. The mechanism is not clear, but it may be due to inhibition of DNA gyrase or topoisomerase IV. 3-Cyanoacetylindole has been used as a fluorescence probe for analytical chemistry studies because it binds to heavy metals such as mercury(II) or lead(II).
