2-Cyclohepten-1-one is a hydroxy ketone that has been identified as a reaction product of carthamus tinctorius. It has also been found to be present in the natural compound, aliphatic hydrocarbon, sesquiterpene lactones and synthetic retinoids. 2-Cyclohepten-1-one can be synthesized from the reaction of an enolate with methyl ketones and chlorine atom. The x-ray crystal structures for 2-cyclohepten-1-one have shown that it is a neutral compound with ph 7. The nmr spectra for this substance has shown that it contains a carbonyl group.
