L-Cystathionine is the active form of cystathionine and is a derivative of the amino acid methionine. It can be used in chemotherapeutic treatment. L-Cystathionine binds to DNA by forming hydrogen bonds with guanines and thymines, which prevents transcription and replication. This binding also inhibits the activity of enzymes such as dna gyrase, dna topoisomerase, and rna synthesis. L-Cystathionine has been shown to increase systolic blood pressure in rats and to reduce bowel disease symptoms. The enzyme's activity may be due to its ability to activate receptors on cells in the body.
