Cruformate is a fatty acid that is naturally occurring in plants. It can be synthesized by reacting carbaryl with sodium hydroxide and hydrogen chloride gas. Cruformate has been shown to have toxicity studies in vivo, but it is not toxic to plants. This compound has been used as a reagent for the analytical determination of chlorinated hydrocarbons in environmental samples. The hydroxyl group of cruformate reacts with chlorine atoms to form compounds that are easily analyzed by liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Cruformate can also be used as an inhibitor of oxidative phosphorylation, which may result in cell death.
