3-Chlorocatechol is a chemical compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as P. aeruginosa, which causes infections in cystic fibrosis patients. The inhibition of bacterial growth is due to 3-chlorocatechol binding to the enzyme DNA gyrase, thereby inhibiting transcription and replication. In addition, 3-chlorocatechol has been shown to bind to dna binding proteins and have transcriptional regulation effects on genes involved in bacterial metabolism. 3-Chlorocatechol also inhibits the production of picolinic acid from amino acid phenylalanine by interacting with the enzyme tyrosine decarboxylase. This prevents picolinic acid from being converted into quinolinic acid, which plays a role in cell proliferation.
