4-Cyano-4'-N-pentylbiphenyl is a chemical compound that has a melting point of about . It is most commonly used in the preparation of other substances, such as polymers, organic pigments, and pharmaceuticals. 4-Cyano-4'-N-pentylbiphenyl can be synthesized through the reaction of benzene with nitrosyl chloride and anhydrous aluminum chloride. The reaction produces a number of products, including phenylnitronitrile, which can be converted to 4-cyano-4'-N-pentylbiphenyl. This compound has been shown to have surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy properties that are superior to many other chemical compounds. The molecule also has high viscosity and heat capacity values, which make it useful for preparing samples for thermal expansion experiments.
