Citronellal is a glycol ether that is used in perfumes and as an insecticide. It is also a potential biomarker for myocardial infarction. Citronellal has been shown to inhibit the growth of gram-positive species, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus, with a rate constant of 1.2 x 10^-5 M-1s-1. Citronellal can be analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, which are analytical methods that have been developed to measure the concentrations of this compound in blood samples. This method has been shown to be useful for determining the concentration of citronellal in acute toxicities.
