3-Chloro-L-alanine is a metabolite of the amino acid L-alanine. It has been used in biological studies to examine the role of alanine in energy metabolism. 3-Chloro-L-alanine is an intermediate in the conversion of L-alanine to pyruvate, which is then converted to acetyl coenzyme A. The racemase enzyme catalyzes this reaction and converts 3-chloro-L-alanine into D-(+)-3-chloro-L-alanine. This reaction has been shown to be synergistic with other enzymes such as 1,4 dioxane hydrochloride, which can increase the rate of reaction by up to two orders of magnitude. The crystal structures of wild type and mutant bacterial strains have also been examined using x ray crystallography.
