2-Chloroethanesulfonyl chloride is a reactive compound that is used to synthesize various pharmaceuticals. The chemical reacts with amines, serine proteases, and methoxy groups to form covalent bonds, which inhibit their activity. 2-Chloroethanesulfonyl chloride inhibits the action of caproic acid by forming a covalent bond with the hydroxyl group on the fatty acid side chain. This inhibition can be reversed by hydrochloric acid. It also has been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth in vitro and in vivo through its ability to bind to estrogen receptors. 2-Chloroethanesulfonyl chloride has a high level of pharmacokinetic properties in rats and mice, but it is not well absorbed when administered orally. 2-Chloroethanesulfonyl chloride is not approved for use in humans because of its potential for carcinogenicity and mutagenicity.
