The optimum pH for this reaction is 6.5 to 7.5 and the optimum temperature is 25°C to 30°C. This compound has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of fatty acids in bacteria, which may be due to its hydroxyl group. 3-Chloropropionic acid reacts with trifluoroacetic acid, giving an ester product, which can then be hydrolyzed back to 3-chloropropionic acid. This chemical also has a physiological function as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals such as biotin and pantothen
