3-Chloro-4-fluorophenol is a chemical compound that inhibits the growth of protozoa by blocking metabolic pathways in the cell. It has been shown to be effective against the tetrahymena organism, which causes intestinal and urinary tract infections. 3-Chloro-4-fluorophenol also demonstrates anticancer activity in tumor cells, and has been shown to reduce the viability of carcinoma cells. It is active against bacteria and fluoroquinolone resistant strains. 3-Chloro-4-fluorophenol blocks DNA synthesis in bacterial cells by reacting with an inorganic base (e.g., piperazine) to form a reactive intermediate that reacts with nucleophilic sites on DNA, such as guanine residues. This results in crosslinking at these sites and prevents DNA replication.
