Calcium hypochlorite is a disinfectant that is used to kill bacteria and other microorganisms. It is an inorganic compound made from calcium and chlorine, which reacts with water to form hypochlorous acid (HOCl). Calcium hypochlorite has been shown to be effective against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Enterococcus faecalis. This chemical has also been shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent for wastewater treatment. The disinfectant properties of calcium hypochlorite are due to its ability to release HOCl upon contact with water or moisture in the air. Hypochlorous acid damages bacterial cell membranes by dissolving lipids and proteins, leading to cell lysis.
