Cloconazole is an antifungal agent that belongs to the group of broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents. It inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, a component of fungal cell membranes that is important for their integrity and function. Cloconazole binds to the p-hydroxybenzoic acid in fungal cell membranes, replacing it with a hydroxyl group. This prevents the formation of ergosterol and leads to leakage of intracellular contents. Cloconazole has been shown to be effective against dimorphic fungi such as Blastomyces dermatitidis, Histoplasma capsulatum, Coccidioides immitis, and Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.
