Calcium Hydride is a chemical compound with the formula CaH2. It is a reactive, diatomic molecule that is an important reagent in organic chemistry. It can be prepared by reacting calcium metal with hydrogen gas and hydrochloric acid. The resulting product will react with water vapor to form calcium chloride and water vapor, which can be condensed to give calcium hydroxide. This process has been used for years to produce calcium hydroxide from limestone or chalk. Calcium Hydride also reacts with copper chloride at constant pressure and temperature, forming a complex of copper chloride and calcium hydride. It is used as a catalyst in palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions that produce carbon-carbon bonds between organic molecules.
Calcium Hydride has been shown to decrease hepatic steatosis by decreasing lipid accumulation and increasing fatty acid oxidation in the liver cells of rats. This may be due to its ability to induce mitochondrial biogenesis through activation of the AMPK/SIRT1
