Chromium(III) chloride is an inorganic compound that is a redox potential, which means it can be reduced to the +4 oxidation state by electron donors and oxidized to the +6 oxidation state by electron acceptors. Chromium(III) chloride has been shown to have carcinogenic effects in animals when given at high doses over a long time period. It is not known whether chromium(III) chloride causes cancer in humans. The carcinogenic activity of chromium(III) chloride has been demonstrated in bioassays conducted on animals. Chromic (III) chloride is used as a molybdenum source in animal feed and as a dietary supplement for humans. It also occurs naturally in soil, rocks, and water supplies.
