2-Chloropropionic acid is a non-toxic organic compound that is used as an oxidation catalyst in organic synthesis. 2-Chloropropionic acid is an alpha, beta unsaturated carboxylic acid, which has been shown to be stable in the presence of hydrogen bond interactions with other molecules. The oxidation process is catalyzed by 2-chloropropionic acid, which converts the substrate into a product called propionaldehyde. This reaction occurs at constant pressure and can be monitored using fatty acids as indicators of the progress of the reaction. A detection time of 30 minutes can be achieved by measuring the concentration of propionaldehyde using gas chromatography. The pH optimum for this reaction is between 7 and 8, and it does not require any ester linkages for this process to occur. 2-Chloropropionic acid has been shown to inhibit liver cells from producing cholesterol, which may lead to its use as a pharmaceutical agent for hyperlipid
