Cyclopropanemethanol has been shown to exhibit antiviral activity against virus type-1, which is due to its ability to inhibit replication. This reaction is thought to occur through inhibition of the CB2 receptor in the host cell membrane, which blocks the virus from entering the cell. The intramolecular hydrogen bond between the hydroxyl group and chlorine atom is also thought to play a role in this process. Cyclopropanemethanol has been shown to inhibit replication of hepatitis C virus and HIV-1, but not HIV-2 or SIV.
