2-Chlorobenzyl mercaptan is a thiol that has been used to study the interactions between ligands and glutathione. It is an unlabelled, sulfoxide-containing compound that can be used to study the interactions of magnetic, dipole, and sulfoxide ligands with glutathione. 2-Chlorobenzyl mercaptan has been shown to deshield protonated nitroxides in rat brain tissue. The effects of 2-chlorobenzyl mercaptan on diazepam binding have also been studied by measuring the amount of free ligand available for interaction with diazepam. Diazepam binds to 2-chlorobenzyl mercaptan at a site different from its binding site on the benzodiazepine receptor. This may be due to differences in the plexes of these two molecules or in their ability to form complexes with other compounds.
