Description:

Ceftizoxime sodium is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis and is often used to treat infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. It binds to the penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Ceftizoxime has been shown to be toxic to mammalian cells in vitro at concentrations of 1 mM and higher. The toxicity of ceftizoxime can be reduced by conjugation with glucuronic acid. Ceftizoxime is an oral prodrug that is hydrolyzed in vivo to ceftriaxone, its active form.
