Ceftizoxime alapivoxil is an oral prodrug of cefpodoxime proxetil that is hydrolyzed by esterases in the stomach and small intestine to form the active drug. It has a high degree of chemical diversity, which makes it difficult for bacteria to develop resistance. Ceftizoxime alapivoxil has been shown to be effective against a mutant strain of lymphocytic leukemia cells. It has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
