Cerevisterol is a fatty acid that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against insects. It has also been shown to inhibit the production of TNF-α and other proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-6, by inhibiting the activation of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer (NFκB) and mitogen activated protein kinases. Cerevisterol has also been shown to inhibit the expression of genes related to inflammation, such as cyclooxygenase 2 and lipoxygenase. Cerevisterol is structurally similar to protocatechuic acid and cerebroside. The molecular docking analysis shows that cerevisterol binds with high affinity to the receptor site for protocatechuic acid in the cytoplasmic membrane. This binding inhibits signal pathways such as NFκB, which are involved in inflammation.
