Maslinic acid is a natural compound that is found in the bark of the African tree, Vernonia amygdalina. It is known to inhibit angiogenesis and has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on squamous cell carcinoma cells in vitro. Maslinic acid also inhibits drug-metabolizing enzymes such as cytochrome P450 and uridine 5'-diphospho-glucuronosyl transferase, which may lead to drug interactions with erythromycin, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Maslinic acid has been shown to have significant hypoglycemic effects in diabetic rats by inhibiting the production of glucose from glycogenolysis. This natural compound also inhibits polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by binding to DNA primers. Furthermore, it has been shown to specifically bind to RNA polymerase II (pol II) and inhibit transcription of mRNA.
