Chloramphenicol palmitate is a metastable form of chloramphenicol that is prepared by mixing chloramphenicol with sodium citrate and palmitic acid. It is used in vitro to study the pharmacokinetics of antimicrobial agents. Chloramphenicol palmitate has shown activity against a wide range of bacteria, including gram-positive cocci and some gram-negative bacilli, but not mycobacteria or fungi. This drug inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing the addition of amino acids to the growing peptide chain. The mechanism of action for chloramphenicol palmitate is similar to that of other antibiotics in this class, such as erythromycin and tetracycline.
