4-Chloro-DL-phenylalanine (4CPA) is an inhibitor of the protein kinase C (PKC) and has been shown to be effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. 4CPA suppresses the immune system by inhibiting PKC, which is involved in signal pathways that regulate inflammation. This drug has also been shown to inhibit pentobarbital sodium-induced locomotor activity, carcinoid syndrome, and MMP-9 activity. It may have a pathogenic mechanism through transcriptional regulation. In rat primary pulmonary hypertension, 4CPA inhibits PKC and reduces vascular tone, which leads to improved blood flow. 4CPA is used for treatment of bowel disease as an ester hydrochloride salt, but has also been used for symptoms such as energy metabolism and inhibitory proteins.
